Having a truck like the Ford Maverick or Toyota Tacoma provides plenty of utility. From their strong towing abilities to their spacious cargo beds, these pickup trucks are ready to be loaded up for a variety of activities or jobs.
What about their ride quality, though, around Lumberton, Mount Laurel, and Medford, NJ? What kind of technology do they offer to make every drive even more comfortable, convenient, and safe? Below, our Miller Ford team takes a more detailed look at the Ford Maverick vs. Toyota Tacoma to find out!
STANDARD HORSEPOWER
EPA-ESTIMATED MPG
PASSENGER VOLUME
Of course, part of the reason you drive a truck is because of what it provides under its hood. Both the Ford Maverick and the Toyota Tacoma equip standard 4-cylinder engines. However, what those powertrains are capable of differs.
The Ford Maverick is a FHEV (Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle) that still manages to out-perform the Toyota Tacoma, which has no hybrid option. The Tacoma’s standard engine produces 159 horsepower, while the Maverick puts out 191 horsepower.
The Maverick also has an available 2.0L EcoBoost® engine that generates 250 horsepower. Both Ford engines are mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission for smooth acceleration and seamless shifting. Meanwhile, the Toyota has two transmission options, one automatic and one manual, but both are limited to just six speeds.
Just because you choose to drive a pickup with strong capabilities doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a fuel-efficient performance as well. The Ford Maverick is proof of that. Its standard hybrid engine provides an EPA-estimated 42 city/33 highway MPG. This is more on par with sedans than with other trucks such as the Tacoma, which pales in comparison with its EPA-estimated 20 city/23 highway MPG.
Plus, the Maverick has the only standard hybrid powertrain on a pickup that provides 500 miles of range on a single tank before you’ll need to stop to refuel.* As mentioned earlier, the Tacoma goes without a hybrid option.
Trucks are built to be large and in charge, offering the space as well as the brawn you’ll need for handling various jobs and recreational activities. Still, they need to be easily maneuvered so you can go wherever the road leads or your plans for the day take you.
When your travels take you off the highways and into the city, you’ll want to be able to navigate more narrow streets and tighter parking conditions. That’s just what you’ll get with the Ford Maverick. It’s powerful and spacious, yet it’s not unnecessarily bulky. Although brawny, it measures just 199.7 inches long and 77.9 inches wide.
The size between the Ford Maverick and the Toyota Tacoma is noticeably different. The Tacoma is bigger overall, with a length of 212.3 inches and a width of 74.4 inches.
With its more compact stature, the Maverick offers easier handling with a tight turning radius, plus the ability to fit into many different types of parking spots.
Although the Maverick is smaller on the exterior, it’s often what’s inside that matters. The Ford Maverick provides a spacious 100.3 cubic feet of passenger volume, which far surpasses the 85.6 cubic feet found in the Toyota Tacoma. That difference is further evidenced in the amount of headroom and legroom these two pickups offer in their two rows of seating.

Yes, the Ford Maverick and the Toyota Tacoma are considered light-duty trucks. However, these pickups still offer plenty of heft to transport the cargo and equipment you need, both for work and for pleasure.
Whether you’re towing a utility trailer with tools or a fishing boat out to the lake, both the Maverick and the Tacoma can accommodate. Either one can standardly tow up to 2,000 pounds. When properly equipped with the appropriate engine and tow package, both pickups can tow a up to 4,000 pounds.
That capability opens even more possibilities, so feel free to hitch up a flatbed trailer, a small travel camper, or some ATVs or jet skis to expand your recreational enjoyment.
Both pickups also have beds that will easily take on 1,500 pounds of payload. The Maverick also intelligently utilizes all its space, which makes it seem like a larger truck when it comes to cargo capability. With its FLEXBED™, you can organize the supplies in your truck bed with dividers.
You can even fit larger items—from furniture to a grill and other tailgate supplies—in the bed with its multi-position tailgate. Plus, it comes standard with rear under-seat storage that lets you keep tools and other gear inside your truck without sacrificing room for passengers.
The Tacoma comes with a spacious bed for hauling a variety of items, but it doesn’t offer the same flexibility as the Maverick when it comes to loading and fitting cargo. It also doesn’t come with the added convenience of under-seat storage.
As you can see, there’s a lot to consider when choosing a pickup truck. Sure, you want to have adequate horsepower and the ability to tow and haul your gear, which you’ll get with either model. With the Ford Maverick, however, you’ll also get excellent fuel economy, maneuverability, and versatility, making it great for your everyday commutes around Lumberton, Mount Laurel, and Medford, NJ.
